Implantology
Oral implantology is a surgical practice aimed at reconstructing missing teeth elements and their supporting tissues (bone and gums). Dental implants are carried out by inserting metallic, ceramic or synthetic roots into the maxillary and jaw bone. In other words, the dental implant is an artificial root that replaces the natural root of the tooth that has been lost.
The loss of natural teeth has always been an invalidating event in terms of mouth function and aesthetics. Prior to the advent of dental implantology, the restoring of teeth was only possible by fixing prostheses to the adjacent teeth. Whenever the number or quality of the natural teeth failed to allow the construction of fixed prostheses, the missing teeth were replaced by applying partial or total mobile prostheses.
With the advent of dental implantology it is no longer necessary to use intact teeth to replace missing ones, or apply dentures or mobile devices. Since the artificial root is stably inserted into the bone, the dental implant can effectively support a capsule or bridge; otherwise it acts as an excellent anchoring device for dentures that are unsteady or not tolerated by the patient.
Moreover, the dental implant reproduces the typical functional stimulus of natural roots on the bone, enabling it to maintain its shape and anatomy over time and avoiding the re-absorption that normally results from tooth loss and is even more pronounced under the pressure of dentures.
